As a first generation Salvadoran-American my artwork depicts themes of Salvadoran diaspora. I create work honoring traditions, rituals, and spiritual beliefs in connection to the way I was raised, and my life in America, born from a family of immigrants. As I grow in a world where those I love are forced into silence, I create work to bring attention to the values and beauty the Latino community has to offer, emphasizing my attention to Salvadoran culture. I create using a variety of colors and textures through mixed media consisting mainly of acrylic/oil paint, photography, and alternative photographic processes. I take inspiration from nature and natural elements, researching their symbolism and the language of flowers to reinterpret the ways my ancestors valued the land and the creation of life. Throughout the practice of my work I reflect on the sacrifices my family makes in order for me to grow, and show my immense appreciation and gratitude to be a part of this Latino community where family strength and unity is most important. The purpose of my work serves me as an outlet to finding my identity and connection to my heritage while showing all audiences that Salvadorans and other Latino communities are strong admirable people who deserve respect in America. My work allows all audiences to make connections to family, childhood, and memory while other Latino audiences have the ability to position themselves into the themes and imagery I depict allowing them to feel representations of home.
