En Mi Jardín, Acrylic on Canvas, Modeling Paste, Wire, Wood, Fabric, Plastic Wrap, 2024
In the language of flowers the yellow chrysanthemum represents sacrifice and selflessness because they willingly sacrifice themselves in order to make way for the next. The alocasia shares similar traits as they are known for sacrificing their oldest leaf in order for the new growth to absorb its nutrients and grow strong. Humans at times share the characteristics of plants and nature when they are willing to give anything in order for their children to thrive.
When I think of my sense of place I think of the place that has allowed me to flourish as the best and strongest version of myself. To me that place is not a physical location but rather the environment of my family. In the embrace of those who have sacrificed themselves without hesitation to nourish, protect, and raise me with love and effort. By creating my own personal garden I represent the idea of my family being the older wilting plants sacrificing themselves for me as the new growth. This is where I belong en el ambiente de mi jardín.
